Local drive to help needy in Haiti and on reservations

MANKATO —

At a one-stop site starting Friday, people can help feed hungry Haitians and provide needed goods to South Dakota Indian reservations.

The Native American Mission and the Mankato chapter of Kids Against Hunger are teaming up to fill two buses with the stuff of life — vitamin-enriched meals for Haitians beset by last year’s earthquake, and hard goods for impoverished residents of Pine Ridge, Standing Rock and Cheyenne River reservations.

The donated school buses will be parked on the site of the former Burger King at 1404 Madison Ave. in Mankato.

The reservation bus will be collecting items ranging from all manner of warm clothing and footwear, bedding, kitchenware, chainsaws and other tools, sports equipment, even a rifle to allow a Lakota reservation resident to hunt wild game for his community.

Christmas toys are also welcome with donors asked to designate which sex and age the gifts are appropriate for.

A full list of items needed can be acquired by emailing jesusislordcometome@yahoo.com or riceusmc@gmail.com.

After the bus makes its delivery, it will be used for reservation transportation purposes.

“A lot of people don’t have transportation because they can’t afford it,” said Mankato Kids Against Hunger Director Tim Stromer.

As for the Kids Against Hunger bus, Stromer said each $50 donation from the public buys a box of food containing enough dehydrated meals to feed 216 Haitian children.

Stromer said the Mankato chapter has set a lofty goal for December — to pack 1 million meals using the organization’s network of volunteer workers. He said going into December the Mankato operation had packed 1.5 million meals for the whole year.

Monday-Friday hours for the bus collections will 6-8 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. The buses will be there two weeks.

The other bus is going to Lifeline Christian Mission in Haiti, the poorest place in the western hemisphere. Even though there are great needs there as well, Lifeline's Director has asked his bus to be filled with Kids Against Hunger food. So what we are asking is for people to stop by the bus (OR at our office) and make a donation to fill the bus full of Kids Against Hunger food. You can donate $50 per box and that will be one case of food - that will feed 216 starving children! You can even place the box on the bus!

The hours the buses will be manned are 6-8 a.m. and 11-1 p.m. and then again at 3-6 p.m. - starting on December 9th.

If you would like to make a donation outside of these times, please call Romayne at (507) -304-1670 and we will make arrangements. You can also stop by at the Kids Against Hunger office and make monetary donations or

please donate online now by clicking here.
